Kelly Clarkson is the original American Idol and her performance when she returned brought Keith Urban and everybody to tears.

Kelly was the winner of season one of American Idol. As has been happening during this Farewell Season of American Idol  on the reality show, Kelly returned to the stage that launched her musical career.

For her performance sang a song that she wrote while pregnant with her first child, daughter River Rose called “Piece By Piece.” She and her husband Brandon Blackstock are expecting their second child soon, a son.

The song tells the story of a tumultuous relationship between a father and daughter after the father left the family when the girl was young. It is a path that Kelly herself has traveled with her estranged father and now feels the love of her husband and sees just what a father should be.

Kelly’s emotions got to her several times performing the song. That along with her great performance and powerful lyrics brought the audience including Keith Urban to tears. When she finished the performance it also brought everybody to their feet for a standing ovation.
