On Thomas Rhett’s last tour, back in 2019, one of his opening acts was his dad, Rhett Akins, who had his own artist career in the 90’s, and is now one of the most successful songwriters in Nashville, having written hits like “Dirt On My Boots,” “Life Changes,” “Look What God Gave Her,” “Honey Bee,” “Boys ‘Round Here,” “I Don’t Want This Night to End” and many more. “We had some good times,” Thomas says, when thinking back on the tour. “It was really special to tour with my dad. He’s always come on the road with me to write but we’ve never actually nailed down, like a whole series of shows that we were gonna do together.”
Rhett Akins was the very first artist to take the stage every night, and Thomas laughs and says, “He’ll complain because he got 15 minutes in the very beginning of the tour and he asked for 17 ½ minutes so he could play another song.”
Ultimately, when Thomas thinks about getting to bring his dad on tour, after standing side stage for years as a kid, watching him play, he says, “I think we’ll have that memory for forever that we got to tour together and write songs together, and it’s really cool to see my fans kind of understand where I came from.”
While Rhett Akins will probably be out on the road with Thomas quite a bit on his upcoming Center Point Road, either as a songwriter or a proud dad, Thomas’ opening acts this time around will be Cole Swindell and Gabby Barrett.
