The NASCAR race at Kentucky Speedway Saturday night (7/13) went into overtime as Kurt Busch battled his brother to claim the win in the Quaker State 400.
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Kentucky had battles from beginning to end throughout the field. Both Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch showed they were contenders for the win throughout the race. Kurt was the winner in stage one while Kyle claimed the win in stage two. However, the biggest battle came in the final laps of the race.
Kyle Busch had built a fairly comfortable lead and appeared to be heading toward another victory. Then, a late race caution came to change everything. The timing of the caution forced NASCAR to go to their overtime finish of a green-white-checkered attempt.
When the green flag waived to re-start the race Kyle and Kurt found themselves out front and door-to-door with each other. The two brothers battled through the last two laps of the race. There were lead exchanges, light contact and excitement all the way around the track. Coming out of the final turn Kurt was able to get a car length on his brother as they crossed the finish line.
Kurt Bush’s win at Kentucky Speedway gave Chevrolet their first win in NASCAR’s top division at the track. It was also Kurt’s first win at the track and first win of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Season to secure his spot in the playoffs.
Kyle Busch obviously took home the runner-up finish with Erik Jones in third place. Rounding out the top five were Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin in fourth and fifth places respectively. See the complete results for the Quaker State 400 here.
Following the race at Kentucky Speedway the top four in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings remain the same; Joey Logano (1st), Kyle Busch (2nd), Kevin Harvick (3rd) and Brad Keselowski (4th). There are only seven races left before the 16 drivers that will have a shot at the championship are set. This weekend the teams will head to the “Magic Mile” of New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 Sunday, July 21st.
