Poll: One in Five Americans Scribble Their Signature

Do you remember when people took pride in making their signature look good? Apparently, that is becoming a skill of the past.

A recent poll asked people, “When you make a credit card purchase and are offered a space to sign, what do you typically do?”

  • 68% say they sign their actual signature
  • 19% draw a line or scribble
  • 7% not sure
  • 3% leave the space blank
I didn’t realize that was an option.
  • 2% say they “Do Something Else”
    What would THAT be?

There seems to be an uptick on bad signatures in the past five years. That would coincide with when credit card companies stopped requiring signatures in 2018. They say they have other ways of detecting fraud. They can also contact you immediately on your smart phone to check if the transaction is legitimate.

Personally, I think the biggest reason is having to sign your name with your finger on a “signature screen.” You just can’t do a good signature with your finger on those tiny screens.

When signing official documents moves completely online with electronic signatures, I feel like the 68% that sign their actual signature will drop dramatically as well.
