Today (4/17) is National Banana Day so let’s find out how most American’s prefer their bananas … green or ripe.
First off, did you know that bananas are actually a BERRY? That is because they grow from a flower with a single ovary, and they also contain seeds. However, if you call them a fruit, you are not wrong. All berries are also fruits.
Dole conducted a survey of 2,000 U.S. consumers to find out how America prefers their bananas for eating. Her are some of the results…
6% like bananas to be “mostly green”
29% like bananas to be “at least partially green”
50% like bananas when they are “perfectly yellow . . . with no green OR brown spots”
The riper bananas are, the sweeter they are. That is why I personally don’t mind brown spots as long as the banana itself isn’t too mushy in feel or texture. When they get that way, it is time to make banana bread with them.
