An early morning fire at the Brickyard Apartments grew to a two-alarm fire and affected multiple units.
The Bloomington Fire Department was dispatched at 6:02am this morning (2/14) to a report of a fire on the porch at 20 Brickyard Dr. Building A. The fire spread quickly and required additional trucks and firefighters to be brought in. Two people were treated and released by EMS. No one was transported to the hospital.
Fire Chief Cory Matheny said, “Personnel worked hard to get ahead of this fire. Due to their efforts, no one was seriously injured, and the fire was confined and extinguished quickly.”
Bloomington Fire Department is working with the property management and the Red Cross to determine the number of people displaced by the fire and what services they will need.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The bulk of the building’s fire damage is contained to a few center units on the 2nd and 3rd floors, with smoke and water damage throughout. The fire loss estimates are currently undetermined.
Bloomington Fire Department also issued this reminder:
“We can’t say it enough: people need to have renters’ and homeowners’ insurance. Fires spread quickly, have a plan to escape. Test your smoke detectors once a month and have a fire extinguisher on hand. The number one cause of residential fires is unattended cooking followed by improperly discarded smoking materials.”
