Former Olympic star Mary Lou Retton is speaking publicly for the first time about her life-threatening battle with a rare form of Pneumonia.
Appearing on the Today show, Retton said a neighbor found her lying on the bedroom floor and having trouble breathing.
She spent two days in the ICU and was released, only to be rushed back to the hospital with dangerously low oxygen levels in her blood.
She was so sick that her daughters Shayla and McKenna were “saying their goodbyes to me.”
Retton continues to recover and still needs oxygen – and says her illness remains a mystery to doctors.
