One of Mary Lou Retton’s daughters has shared that the Olympic Champion has suffered a “scary setback” and remains in the ICU.
Last week we heard that the 1984 Team USA Olympic Gymnastic Gold Medalist was “fighting for her life” against a rare form of pneumonia. One of her daughters, Shayla Schrepfer, shared an update that things were improving and her mom’s “progress is truly remarkable.”
However, last night (Wednesday 10/19) Shayla shared another update stating that, “Basically, at the beginning of this week, we were going on the up-and-up, we were so excited, seeing so much progress; and then yesterday we had a pretty scary setback.”
She shared that Mary Lou remains in the ICU and is still fighting. She also said, “She had a better day today, which is great, she is just really, really exhausted.” You can watch the entire Instagram video message here.
Another one of Mary Lou’s daughters started an online fundraiser for her mom to help cover the medial bills. That fund had a goal of $50,000. It has already reached more than $453,000.
