Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary yesterday (10/12/22). The couple met in kindergarten and became friends in sixth grade. From that point on, Thomas admits he was smitten with Lauren.
They briefly dated in 10th grade until Lauren decided they were better off as friends. Afterward, they dated other people, attended separate colleges and even got into serious relationships with other people. However, their families remained friends, and when Thomas reconnected with Lauren in 2011 at a graduation party for her younger sister, he knew he was still in love with her.
He ultimately confessed his feelings to her. Six months later Thomas proposed to Lauren, but not before asking her dad for permission. It is a moment Thomas says he will never forget.
“I did not show up unannounced. I actually called Lauren‘s dad and said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna come over. I would like to ask you a question.’ And if you know my wife’s dad, he is one of the most amazing but also crazy humans on this planet. And so he goes, ‘What are you comin’ over here for, to ask me if you wanna marry my daughter? I mean the answer’s yes, but you can come over here if you want to.’ And so I was like, ‘Alright, well, on my way.’ And I get to the front door and he’s just standing at the front door with a video camera. And he’s like, ‘Alright Tom, ask me what you wanna ask me.’ And that just completely broke all the ice. He knew it was happening anyway. But I’ll just never forget that because it was the most untraditional asking your wife’s dad for permission to marry ‘em or whatever. But I remember that so vividly, and he still, every year at Christmas he shows me that video.”
Perhaps the reason Lauren’s dad knew Thomas would be asking to marry his daughter is because six months earlier, before Thomas confessed his feelings to Lauren, he confessed to his future father-in-law that he was still in love with his daughter. At that time Lauren’s dad told Thomas he had better tell Lauren or else he was going to say something to her.
