The Ally 400 became a marathon event for the NASCAR Cup Series Sunday (6/26) as lightning and rain delayed the race at Nashville Superspeedway late into the night.
The second ever Cup Series race to be held on the 1.33 mile concrete track started in late afternoon just outside the Music City. There was rain in the area around the track. Lightning forced the race to stop for nearly an hour early in the event.
When racing resumed it was Martin Truex Jr. that was able to claim the victory in both the first and second stages. It appeared that the winner would come from the Joe Gibbs Racing team as Martin, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch were the drivers fighting for the lead most of the race. Denny was the leader for a race high 114 laps.
However, the rain would go under another red flag issued due to lightning and rain. This would delay the race for more than two hours with it resuming around 9 p.m. central time.
When the race resumed cars that had previously not really been in contention were able to race to the front. This included Chase Elliott. Following a late race caution Chase Elliott was able to take the lead and hold it for the final four laps. He claimed his second win of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Kurt Busch claimed the runner-up finish. Ryan Blaney was the third-place car with Kyle Larson finishing in fourth. Ross Chastain rounded out the top five. See the complete race results for the Ally 400 here.
Chase Elliott leaves Nashville as the leader in the point standings. Ross Chastain sits in second and Ryan Blaney is in third. Kyle Busch and Joey Logano complete the top five in fourth and fifth respectively. See the complete NASCAR Cup Series Point Standings here.
Next up for the Cup Series is another road course. The Kwik Trip 250 presented by JOCKEY Made in America takes place Sunday, July 3rd at Road America in Wisconsin.
