Brett Young has had several up-tempo hits in his career, including “Sleep Without You,” “Here Tonight” and “Catch.” However, most people would agree, including Brett, that ballads are kind of his specialty. “It’s definitely where I gravitate,” says Brett. “The track record speaks for itself. I think we’ve seen that that’s what works for me, and I’m not mad at it.”

As a songwriter Brett is a sucker for writing a good ballad because he says, “I’m always lyrics first and story first, regardless of the tempo of the song I’m writing, I think that people are less likely to pay attention to the lyric when they’re listening to an up-tempo song. It makes you start movin’ and it puts you in a different head-space.”

Also, as a matter of personal preference, Brett says, “The type of song that I would choose to listen to if I was driving around in my car by myself, is the type of song that’s working for me as an artist […a ballad]. I enjoy writing them. I enjoy performing them.”

Brett also believes ballads help him achieve his mission as a songwriter. “I think that tuggin’ on the heartstrings is what we’re asked to do as songwriters anyway,” he says. “And I think it’s easier to do in a ballad.”

He certainly nailed it in his latest heart-wrenching single. “You Didn’t.”
