Betty White’s cause of death has been revealed and the legendary actress died from a stroke. 

The Golden Girls star, who passed away on Dec. 31, just 17 days shy of her 100th birthday, died due to a cerebrovascular accident, according to her death certificate.

A cerebrovascular accident, commonly known as a stroke, is a loss of blood flow to part of the brain, which damages brain tissue. It is typically caused by blood clots and broken blood vessels in the brain.

She was coherent and awake after the stroke, but sadly passed away in her sleep.

Her longtime friend and agent, Jeff Witjas, said: “Betty passed in her sleep peacefully without pain. To me this is the most important thing and brings me comfort as her dear friend. Anything else is private to Betty.”

A celebration of her life is still planned for January 17th in theaters, what would have been her 100th birthday.  

The day is also being turned into a way to honor Betty with the #BettyWhiteChallenge that has gone viral on social media. Fans are being asked to make a donation to an animal shelter or zoo on this day to honor Betty. Get details on places to do that locally here.
