The Ellen DeGeneres Show is coming to an end after season 19.
Ellen confirmed the news herself in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter today (5/12) after she shared the news with her staff, and plans to sit down with Oprah Winfrey tomorrow (5/13) to discuss the news publicly.
Ellen said, “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.”
The show will come to an end in 2022 with season 19.
Ellen debuted the show of her namesake in 2003 and over the years has earned 64 Daytime Emmys.
Ellen had considered ending the show in 2016, but was convinced by her brother to keep it going. When the network wanted to sign 4 more years, Ellen agreed to 3, even though 4 years would have taken her to season 20. She says everyone kept saying, “You know, that’s going to be 19, don’t you want to just go to 20? It’s a good number.’ So is 19.”
It’s been no secret that the last 10 months have been difficult for The Ellen Show, with allegations of a toxic workplace, and even an internal investigation. Watching Ellen she has seemed a bit disengaged recently (personal opinion), so maybe now is the right time.
