Thomas Rhett’s latest #1 single “What’s Your Country Song” includes a line that was initially intended as a joke for his dad Rhett Akins.
The song is about reminiscing about that country song that represents a special memory for you. Thomas Rhett’s dad was an artist back in the 90s. He had a hit song titled “That Ain’t My Truck.”
Rhett Akins was among the writers in the room working on the new song. Thomas Rhett explains a reference to his dad’s 1995 song that started as a joke ended up a part of the chart topping song.
“As we started to kinda craft this song, we had the chorus first, and then we were trying to figure out where to take the verses. And we kinda thought, what if we could tell a story in the verses through using some of our favorite song titles, whether it’s from the 80s or from the 90s or now. I remember the first line that I spit out was, ‘Are you heartbroke because you know that ain’t your truck in her drive,’ literally as a joke, just cause dad was sittin’ there. And as we started to write the song, it felt like it just fit. It was pretty funny, but I’m glad dad got a shout out in that song.”
It sounds like Thomas Rhett and his dad Rhett Akins now have another special memory to share in a song about remembering special memories.
“What’s Your Country Song” is Thomas Rhett’s 17th consecutive number one song. Listen for it on Bloomington-Normal’s #1 Country, B104.
