NASCAR competed for the first time ever at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course Sunday (8/16). Chase Elliott continued his recent road course domination by winning the GoBowling.com 235.
Chase has won the last two NASCAR Cup Series road course races: the Bank of America ROVAL 400 and the Go Bowling at the Glen.
Since this was the first time the NASCAR Cup Series had competed on the Daytona Road Course, everybody was relying on experience at other road courses for this race. The drivers competed hard, but with some restraint at the same time.
There were only four caution periods. The first two were at the conclusion of the first two stages. Chase Elliott was the winner of stage one. Denny Hamlin was the winner of stage two.
Lightning struck close to the track bringing out the third caution. It also required a red flag period of 31 minutes and 14 seconds to ensure the safety of all drivers, teams, crew and officials at the track.
Chase Elliott took the lead of the race nearing the end and built a comfortable cushion ahead of the second place car. He was cruising to a win when Kyle Busch brought out the fourth and final caution of the race. That brought with it a re-start of the race with just three laps remaining.
Chase was able to race to the lead again on that re-start and hold off a hard charging Denny Hamlin. Chase scored his third consecutive road course win. It was also his second win of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season. Obviously it was his first win on the Daytona Road Course as he is the first ever NASCAR Cup Series winner on that course.
Denny Hamlin claimed second place with Martin Truex Jr. crossing the finish line in third place. Jimmie Johnson scored a fourth place finish with Chris Buescher rounding out the top five. See the complete race results for the GoBowling.com 235 here.
Kevin Harvick remains the leader in the point standings. Denny Hamlin holds second place with Brad Keselowski in third. Chase Elliott is in fourth place and Ryan Blaney rounds out the top five.
There are just three races remaining in the regular season. The Playoffs outlook is the same as the point standings in the top five spots with one exception. Kevin Harvick is ranked at #1, Denny Hamlin is ranked at #2, Brad Keselwoski is ranked at #3 and Chase Elliott is ranked at #4. However, in fifth place in the post-season outlook it is Joey Logano ranked in fifth place. See the NASCAR Cup Series point totals and Playoff ranking here.
Next up is a doubleheader weekend at Dover International Speedway for the Drydene 311 Saturday and Sunday, August 22nd and 23rd.
