Kevin Harvick nearly had a perfect sweep of the NASCAR–Doubleheader weekend at Michigan International Speedway.
The NASCAR Cup Series raced Saturday (08/08/20) in the FireKeepers Casino 400 and Sunday (08/09/20) in the Consumers Energy 400. It was a chance for drivers to not only win races, but also give their car manufacturer bragging rights in the shadow of the “Motor City.”
Saturday Kevin Harvick started from the third position. It did not take long for him to get out front and show the field he was the car to beat. Kevin led a race high 92 laps in the 161 lap race. He was the winner of both the first and second stages on his way to win the FireKeepers Casino 400.
The win was the fifth win of 2020 for Kevin. Brad Keselowski scored the runner-up finish with Martin Truex Jr. in third place. Ryan Blaney came across the finish line fourth with Kyle Busch rounding out the top five. See the complete race results for the FireKeepers Casino 400 here.
Sunday Kevin had to start from the twentieth position. The top 20 from Saturday was inverted to set the starting positions for Sunday’s race. The first stage Sunday was the only score Kevin was not able to claim for himself as Clint Bowyer won that stage. Shortly after the start of the second stage Kevin was able to get back to the lead and pick up where he left off Saturday in dominating the field. Kevin did win stage two of the race Sunday. He also went to Victory Lane in back-to-back races at Michigan International Speedway on back-to-back days.
The win gave Kevin a season leading six race wins for 2020. Denny Hamlin scored the second place finish. Martin Truex Jr. claimed third place and Kyle Busch took home fourth place. Joey Logano rounded out the top five. See the complete race results for the Consumers Energy 400 here.
The sweep of the doubleheader weekend allowed Kevin to remain the leader in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings. It also puts him at the top of the outlook for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.
Things will get interesting as the drivers and teams will face the Daytona International Speedway Road Course for the first time ever next. The GoBowling 235 takes place Sunday, August 16th.
