Nickelodeon has confirmed that a prequel series about everyone’s favorite sponge has been green lit. According to Deadline, the new show will follow a 10 year old SpongeBob at Kamp Koral with his friends. The show will be a 3D animated show rather than the 2D animation of the original cartoon.

“In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. SpongeBob SquarePants‘ Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller co-executive produce the prequel.” the Deadline article says. The series has a 13 episode order to start off with.

The original cartoon has been on the air for nearly 20 years! The first episode premiered on July 17th, 1999.
