Chase Elliott scored a big NASCAR win Sunday (4/28) in the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspedway!
Things looked like the race could be traditional “‘Dega Baby” as the first caution came out for a six-car crash on lap 12 of the race. However, things were actually pretty tame by Talladega standards.
The next cautions flags would fly at the end of the first two stages of the race. Ty Dillon was the winner of stage 1 while Chase Elliott scored the stage 2 win.
There was a fourth caution for debris on the track. The fifth caution came out for a five car crash. The number of cars didn’t make this the “Big One,” but the severity would make it classify in my book. Kyle Larson’s car hit the inside wall and then flipped several times. Thanks to the safety measures NASCAR mandates in the cars he walked away from the crash with no injuries.
Chase Elliott took the white flag for the last lap and the final crash took place on the backstretch of the lap. Five cars were involved in that incident that forced the final caution flag to come out. NASCAR rules stipulate that once the leader takes the white flag the next flag ends the race. That gave Chase his first 2019 win. It also gave Chevrolet their first win of the season.
In fact, Chevrolet claimed the top three finishing positions as Alex Bowman finished in second place with Ryan Preece in third. Joey Logano drove his Ford to a fourth place finish. Daniel Hemric gave Chevy four of the top five spots in the race claiming fifth place. See the complete race results for the GEICO 500 here.
Kyle Busch and Joey Logano hold steady in the point standings at first and second places respectively. Denny Hamlin jumps up to take over third place. Kevin Harvick slips back a spot to fourth place. Brad Keselowski also slips a spot to fifth place in the standings. See the complete Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series point standings here.
This week the drivers will head to the “Monster Mile” of Dover International Speedway for the Gander RV 400 Sunday. May 5th.
