Thomas Rhett (TR) is the son of country music singer-songwriter Rhett Akins. This past weekend TR covered one of his father’s hit songs live.
Rhett Akins was chasing his dream in the mid 90s when I was working for Decca Records. Rhett had several hit songs at country radio like “I Break For Brunettes,” “She Said Yes,” “Don’t Get Me Started” and “That Ain’t My Truck” to name a few.
Since that time Rhett has continued in country music and found amazing success as one of country music’s most prolific song writers. Over the years he has penned hit songs for many country music stars like “I Don’t Want This Night To End” by Luke Bryan, “Honey Bee” by Blake Shelton, “”Tonight Looks Good On You” by Jason Aldean, “”Point At You” by Justin Moore and Thomas Rhett’s hit singles “Get Me Some of That” and “Star of the Show” just to name a handful.
TR is obviously proud to be his father’s son and shows that in many ways all the time. One of the ways is by covering his dad’s songs when he performs live. That is just what he did last Sunday (1/14).
TR was one of the many artists that joined Dierks Bentley at the grand opening of his new downtown Nashville bar and restaurant, Whiskey Row Nashville. During that event Dierks invited his fellow country music artists on stage to perform a song or two including Cole Swindell, Kelsea Ballerini, Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris and more including TR.
Luckily for us a person in the audience that night shared a video of TR’s performance of his dad’s hit song “That Ain’t My Truck” on YouTube. Watch the cover of the song in the video at the top of the page.
Well done Thomas Rhett on covering your dad Rhett Akins’ song!
