Kyle started the race from the pole position and began showing that he would be the car to beat Sunday afternoon (9/24) at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He led a race high 187 of the 300 lap race.
Martin Truex Jr. has been the dominating car all season long, won the regular season title, started the NASCAR playoffs as the top seed and started this race as the top driver on the Chase Grid. He made a statement early in Sunday’s race that Kyle would have to deal with him if he was going to win the ISM Connect 300. Martin was able to run Kyle down and pass him to claim the win of stage one of the race. In fact, Martin wasn’t too far behind Kyle in laps led for the day with 112 circuits around “The Magic Mile” in the lead.
The “magic” wasn’t there for Martin, however, as he got caught up in an accident on the track as stage 2 was coming to an end. Kyle was able to avoid the accident and claim the win of the stage while Chase Grid drivers Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick had their day end early due to the race. Martin along with Chase Grid drivers Austin Dillon and Denny Hamlin were also involved in the accident, but they were able to fix their cars and continue on in the race to recover as many points as possible after the incident.
Following the multiple car wreck it was pretty much the Kyle Busch show as he dominated the 150 lap final stage and easily drove to the win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The win gave him three career wins at the track and more importantly and automatic advance to the next round of NASCAR’s playoffs.
Kyle Larson continues his solid and consistent 2017 season as he claimed the runner-up finish yesterday. Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski finished in third and fourth places respectively. Martin Truex Jr. was able to battle back from the mid-race accident and finish in the fifth place for the race. See the complete race results in the ISM Connect 300 here.
Martin Truex Jr. remains the leader in the point standings with Kyle Larson holding steady in second place. Kyle Busch’s win moves him up to third place in point standings with Brad Keselowski remaining in the fourth place for another week. Denny Hamlin was able to recover from the accident and acquire enough points to move up to fifth in the standings. See the complete Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series point standings here.
Kyle Busch joins Martin Truex Jr. with automatic advances to the next round of the playoffs having won races in the first round of The Chase. Kyle Larson and Brad Keselowski have both earned enough points to clinch their spots in the next round of the playoffs without a win in the first three race round.
The rest of the drivers on the Chase Grid will be either looking to earn enough points to advance or (for some drivers) get the “must win to advance” when NASCAR heads to Dover International Speedway in the Apache Warrior 400 presented by Lucas Oil Sunday, October 1st, the NASCAR Round One Elimination Race.
