Jimmie Johnson Wins NASCAR Bristol Race on Monday [VIDEO, PHOTOS]

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Race scheduled for Sunday (4/23) was delayed until today (4/24) due to rain at Bristol Motor Speedway. Jimmie Johnson likely didn’t mind since he captured the win.

Like most of you, I had to keep an eye on the race via NASCAR.com to see how the Food City 500 was playing out while I was at work today. That means that I really can’t give you a summary of the race other than what the race stats reveal. You can also watch a video recap of the Bristol race in the NASCAR video at the top of this page.

What I can tell you is that Kyle Larson started in the pole position and dominated almost the entire first half of the race. He led the first 202 laps of the 500 lap race giving him the most laps led for the day. However, after that point there were six other drivers that would lead the race while Kyle would not get back to the number one position on any lap through the end of the race.

The race also experienced nine caution flags during the race with the first yellow flag also featuring a five minute and ten second red flag period to clean up an accident on the track.

From the NASCAR stats report I can tell you that Jimmie Johnson drove his #48 Chevrolet to the lead of the race for the third time on lap 480. He kept it in that position through the final laps of race to claim his second career victory at Bristol Motor Speedway as well as his second win of the 2017 NASCAR season. In fact, that’s back-to-back wins for 2017 since Jimmie was the winner at Texas two weeks ago before NASCAR took the weekend for Easter off.

Clint Bowyer claimed the runner-up finish with Kevin Harvick in third place. Matt Kenseth finished fourth with Joey Logano in fifth place. See the complete race results for the Food City 500 here.

Kyle Larson remains the leader in the point standings with second place Chase Elliott and third place Martin Truex Jr. also holding their spots following Bristol. Joey Logano moves up a spot to fourth place with Brad Keselowski slipping back a spot to fifth place in the standings. See the complete Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series point standings here.

The NASCAR Cup Series drivers and teams now have one day less to prepare for this week’s race at Richmond International Raceway. The Toyota Owners 400 is set for Sunday afternoon, April 30th.
