Chris Buescher Wins Rain Delayed, Fog Shortened NASCAR Race at Pocono [VIDEO, PHOTOS]

Chris Buescher found himself in the right spot at the right time to win the rain delayed and fog shortened Pennsylvania 400 at Pocono Raceway in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series.

Rain on Sunday (7/31) at Pocono Raceway forced NASCAR officials to postpone the Sprint Cup race until today, Monday (8/1). The same weather situation happened earlier this year at the track forcing the Axalta We Paint Winners 400 to be held on the Monday after the scheduled Sunday race. Kurt Busch would ultimately save fuel to win that race.

While the second 2016 Monday race at Pocono would have many drivers falling victim to the typical perils of Tricky Triangle bringing out four of the seven total caution periods during the race, it would be the tricky weather that would account for the other three.

The rain the day before prompted NASCAR to issue a competition caution on lap 17 for teams to get a look at the tires and adjust to a washed of track. Some light rain would bring out caution number four at lap 86. But, it was the unexpected seventh and final caution for FOG that would ultimately end the race 22 laps short of the schedule 160 lap race.

You read that right, low visibility due to FOG at Pocono Raceway would bring out the yellow flag at lap 133 with Chris Buescher becoming the 11th leader of the day as a result of other cars pitting under green. Chris would remain the leader as NASCAR parked the cars on pit row under the red flag at lap 138.

NASCAR waited 80 minutes to see if the fog would lift before deciding to end the race and call it official since they had passed the half-way point. That meant that former Xfinity Cup Champion Chris Buescher would now score his first win in the Sprint Cup series by way of fog. Brad Keselowski would be credited with a second place finish followed by Regan Smith in third, Kevin Harvick in fourth and Tony Stewart in fifth place. Kevin Harvick, Bard Keselowski and Kurt Busch remian one, two and three in that order in the point standings. Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards both move up a spot with Kyle in fourth and Carl in fifth. See the complete NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings here.

The win makes Chris Buescher Chase eligible. however, he needs to get inside the top thirty in the points and remain there at the end of the regular season to be included as a contender in NASCAR’s playoffs. Currently he is in 31st place, just six points away from being included on the Chase Grid. See the 2016 NASCAR Chase Grid here.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup teams will head to Watkins Glen next for the final road course race of the year. The Cheez-It 355 at the Glen is Sunday, August 7th and could be a chance for another unlikely driver to get a shot at making the Chase Grid.
