Canaan Smith has announced a unique “Smash Cancer Initiative” that involves smashing musical instruments on stage and benefiting St. Jude.
If you see Canaan smashing his band’s instruments on stage, he is not living out his “rock-and-roll dreams.” In fact, he is trying to help the kids of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital be able to live out whatever dreams they have in life.
The idea began when Canaan destroyed a drum at one of his recent shows and didn’t know what to do with it. (OK, that time it might have been him living out his childhood “rock and roll dreams.”) Afterwards Canaan didn’t know what to do with the destroyed drums. He noticed how the fans reacted to the actions though, and then a light came on in his head.
“Fans totally latched on which made me realize we could turn this into something positive and benefit a charity I’ve been passionate about for a while,” Canaan explains, adding, “It’s been crazy and rewarding to see the reaction.”
Canaan will smash instruments on stage during his shows, before autographing them and auctioning them to raise money for St. Jude. The Smash Cancer initiative caught the attention of the Guitar Center, which has donated a significant number of drum sets and guitars to the cause.
While the Smash Cancer Initiative has just been officially announced, Canaan has already raised nearly $20,000 for St. Jude with his onstage antics for a great cause. You can watch a video of Canaan’s “Smash Cancer” performance at the bottom of the page.
Hats off to Canaan Smith on his unique Smash Cancer Initiative to benefit St. Jude.
