Star Wars: The Force Awakens made movie history in its first weekend of release by bringing in 238 million dollars!

That box office total makes the newest Star Wars movie the largest North American debut of any movie in North America.

The Force Awakens beats the previous record by nearly 30 million dollars topping the 208.8 million dollars brought in by Jurassic World in its opening weekend.

While the newest installment of the Star Wars franchise received great reviews which likely helped the ticket sales, it was also a widely anticipated movie, so the opening weekend was expected to be big.

Probably not a surprising fact that 58% of the audience that went to Star Wars: The Force Awakens was male. Adults represented 71% of the movie’s opening weekend ticket sales while teens only accounted for nine percent of the audience.

How did the other movies fair for the weekend? (YES, there actually were other movies in theaters this past weekend.) The second place movie’s total at the box office was in a galaxy far, far away from Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip brought in 14.4 million dollars.

Sisters brought in 13.4 million dollars at the box office, while The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 came in at 5.7 million dollars and Creed was only able to punch out 5.1 million dollars.
