Joey Logano dominated the Bank of America 500 to capture the NASCAR Sprint Cup win and advance on the Chase Grid while other Chase drivers had disaster find them at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The night race was rained out Saturday, October 10th and moved to Sunday afternoon, October 11th. The move from night to day made many drivers happy and others not so happy.
With the rain washing off the track, NASCAR told the drivers that they would issue a competition caution around lap 15 of the race for teams to see how the tires were handling the daytime race instead of nighttime conditions. However, the first yellow flag flew much earlier than that on lap two of the race. There would be a total of nine caution periods during the Sprint Cup race with the cars following the pace car for 44 laps.
It was during one of those caution periods that disaster found Chase Grid driver Kyle Busch. He had been running near the front and even led the race. Kyle Busch decided late to stay out on the track instead of pit under the caution period and Kyle Larson made a late decision to head into the pits which resulted in the two cars wrecking at the entrance of pit row.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. also had disaster find him when Carl Edwards got into the back of his car sending him into the wall. Matt Kenseth was also the victim of disaster when Ryan Newman got together with him on the track sending Matt into the wall.
While that misfortune was going on for those drivers, Joey Logano was busy leading a race high 227 laps in the 300 lap race including the final lap to capture his first win at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The bigger achievement in winning the Bank of America 500 is that Joey receives and automatic advance to the next round of the 2015 NASCAR Chase.
Kevin Harvick grabbed a second place finish with Martin Truex Jr. finishing in third place. Denny Hamlin finished fourth and Kurt Busch rounded out the top five. See the complete race results for the Bank of America 500 here.
Joey’s win puts him at the top of the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings. The devastating day for Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kesneth puts them at the bottom of the current Chase Grid facing a tough path to advance to the next round over the next two races of this round. Kyle is 10 points below the cutoff line while Dale Jr. is 19 points under the line and Matt is a huge 32 points down on the NASCAR Chase Grid. Ryan Newman is the other driver currently below the line, but is only six points to the bad.
The next chance for Chase Drivers to advance by winning a race will be Sunday, October 18th at Kansas Speedway in the Hollywood Casino 400.
