Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Watch the Chicago River turn GREEN!
It’s been a tradition for more than 40 years to turn the Chicago river bright green on St. Patrick’s day. The Chicago Journeymen Plumbers took to task by dumping the bright emerald green concoction off the sides of motorboats into the river as Chicago-ans cheered them on this weekend.
What’s in the “secret” concoction by the way? Well, that remains a secret. All they say is that it is an environmentally friendly powder. It was used back in the day to detect leaks from plumbing into the river and Mayor Richard Dailey noticed it was the perfect shade of “Irish Green”, so the tradition began back in 1962.
Recently Chicago native Kurt Miller posted a time-lapse video of the process on YouTube! Check it out!
