Beginning now through April
13, Mt. Moriah Christian Church will serve as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) preparation site and offer free income tax preparation for individuals
earning less than $35,000 and families earning $50,000 or less a
year.
This year Mt. Moriah will be one of 3 sites in the area to offer
free tax preparation.
Certified volunteers have received training to help
prepare basic tax returns Volunteers are
also trained to help with special
credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the
Child Tax
Credit. Returns are processed electronically so taxpayers can get their money
quickly and deposited directly to their bank accounts. Individuals who usually
do not file because they do not owe any taxes are encouraged to visit a site to
find out if they qualify to receive a refund under the Earned Income Tax Credit
(EITC) program.
Local data provided by the IRS showed that over half of
2007 federal returns with EITC were
professionally prepared at a cost of $200
per return. The area average EITC was $1868.
Hours at Mt. Moriah are
Tuesday-Friday, 1-7pm with no appointment necessary. Mt. Moriah is
located at
510 E. Washington in Bloomington.
